From Zero to Ironman and Everything Inbetween

Hi my name is Michael Wenn I’m 25 and married to my wonderful wife Jo and have a beautiful boy called Aston. This blog is about my journey into Triathlons and eventually IRONMAN. I hope you enjoy the read about my story and please feel free to laugh at my expense, and comment, along the way.

For those of you not sure what a Triathlon consists of, here goes my shot at explaining it. The event is a mixture of three sports.

Notoriously swimming
Notoriously swimming...

Followed by biking
followed by biking...

Lastly running
lastly running.

You switch from one to another in what is called a transition and you try your best to do all three as fast as you can. There are many variations of Triathlon around the world, both in distance covered and how, or where, you do the different stages. There are three distances I am interested in:

  • Sprint = 400 meters swimming 20 km Biking 5 km running
  • Olympic = 800 meters swimming 40 km Biking 10 km running
  • Ironman = 3.8 km swimming 180 km Biking 42.2km running

I want to do the Ironman but I have never done any sort of triathlon before! I know you probably think I am insane…….and if you don’t, then probably you are insane yourself and I expect to see you at the start line. I want to turn my dream to reality so welcome to my very painful and long journey. I hope you will be able to enjoy my discomfort and blisters as much as I will. I’ll post next time about how I started on the training road. Please give me any tips, as I will need all the help I can get!

1 - OK fair point I will post pics of me next time. Please do not laugh though haha Emoticon

2 - So why start with the big one? Won't your ligaments & tendons be getting seriously stressed out during that long run of the 3rd leg?

My brother ran a marathon after training that consisted of a half marathon one week previously which he had found easy. He was a rower and fit but big. The marathon length and lack of distance training exposed an unready knee which remained weak for years afterwards and limited his jogging options. Are u willing to withdraw if you get stabbing pains that might indicate real damage and do better at the next one or it a matter of getting to the finish whatever the cost?

What are u going to eat during the event?

3 - Ok so Harry your right it would be totally stupid to go straight into Iron Man distance before having tried the others. I will be doing between 20 and 30 races before then so I will be prepared.

I will post about the training and races inbetween which is where the title for this blog comes from.

Nice to know you care though EmoticonEmoticon

4 - Hi Michael,

You have the right approach in building up your race experience before doing Ironman. I have no doubt that anyone could finish an ironman, I've seen 18st heavyweights take 18 hours and walk pretty much the entire run, but where's the fun in that. The more prepared you are the more fun you will have on race day. The hard part is the months of training in the build up.

I'm a member of Leeds and Bradford Tri club and my girlfriend is one of the coaches there (very handy). I'd be happy to offer any tips. You have my email.

5 - Sounds good, but where is the proof ! These random pictures you can get from images.google.com ! lol

6 - Hey Ed could you email me on MICHAEL_WENN@TEAMSTUDIO.COM

I would love to zap you for knowledge to save me some pain finding out the hard way.

7 - Emoticon an olympic triathlon is 1500m swimming, 40km biking and 10km running...not 800m swimming...and the short triathlon is 750m swimming, 20km biking and 5km running not 400m...
